Top tips for buying mobility cars
When you’re looking to purchase a mobility car, it’s important that you choose the right one for your specific needs. There are a lot of factors that should be taken into account and we’ve put together some top tips to help you make the right choice.
Do some research
Buying a car is an important decision, especially if you have additional needs that have to be considered, so you should look at exactly what you want from the car and how it can help you to get about. You should look at the size and shape of the vehicle, how many people it needs to accommodate and any adaptations that you require, such as wheelchair access so that you can create a short list of options.
After the purchase price of the vehicle and the costs for tax and insurance, one of the biggest expenses with any car is the running costs, including fuel and maintenance. Some cars are far more fuel efficient than others, so it’s useful to compare this before making a decision.
The perfect size
When you’re buying wheelchair adapted vehicles, you should ideally choose one that is slightly larger than you’ll need to enable you to easily get in and out and ensure that there is space for luggage, equipment and passengers.
Have a test drive
It’s hard to know exactly how a car suits you before you’ve actually driven it, so it’s helpful to arrange a test drive before you confirm a purchase. While you have the vehicle you can practise getting in and out and check that it has the boot space and features you require. At Southern Mobility, we can arrange a special home visit, to demonstrate a vehicle to you from the comfort of your own home.
Think about the future
You can’t necessarily predict what’s going to happen in the future, especially regarding your health, but you should try and think about your longer term needs and how these might impact on your use of the vehicle.
