Wheelchair user experience

The words exciting and WAV don’t usually go together in our industry but they do with the Kia Soul. Quirky is a good word to use for the Kia Soul, and the fact that it is a car too means the suspension is car-like, too, so the ride is good. When onboarding the Soul, you will note the low incline single piece ramp makes entry feel safe and secure. Inside it is surprisingly spacious too in the back, so you won’t feel claustrophobic when onboard despite its apparent small size.

You may think we go on a bit about the size, but it is rare to find a WAV that is an attractive small car with a good space for wheelchair users. It has ample entry headroom, and the internal height is surprisingly good despite its size. Inside, visibility is good on all sides for most wheelchair users, and this big small car will feel bright and airy. It may not be ideal for everyone, but the Soul represents excellent value for money and will never be bland.

 Driver experience

A word of warning, you are going to feel a little spoiled. Stepping into this car, and yes, I did say car and not a van, you will straight away feel like you will be driving something a little different. It is not a hard car to drive, and the cockpit layout is friendly and where it needs to be to make a driver feel comfortable. You won’t be disappointed when you oppress the load pedal either, as the Soul is not shy going forward. We know you aren’t buying this because you want to, and we know it’s a need, but if you decide it might be for you, the Soul will not disappoint.

Equipment levels are good with everything you’d hope for, such as air conditioning, Bluetooth, hill hold, a multi-function steering wheel and a surprisingly good stereo with six speakers. This number of speakers is a rarity in such a small WAV, and it makes a big difference, so if you are into your music, you can stream it as well. It drives well; the engine has plenty of get up and go. If that’s your thing, it’ll prove nippy and agile too.

Passenger experience

The Kia Soul’s front passenger seat is comfy, and as it’s the original manufacturer seat, it is well designed to suit most people, although due to its size, the Soul usually only comes with one rear coach-built seat. Having two rear seats is possible, but most were built with just one as a second would restrict wheelchair access. The rear seat is ample enough with enough legroom. Although long journeys could prove a little challenging, there is always an excellent sound system to enjoy.

SMV loves

We like the Kia Soul, and it feels like it has one too. The Soul is quick, agile and compact and does what it says on the tin. It’s great to look at, comfortable to be in, and it is a car rather than a van which is a bonus. The stereo has a great sound, and its quirky looks, whilst won’t suit all, will make those who do like it smile and that cannot be a bad thing. Equipment levels are ample, and we think it’s a pretty cool way to get around.
