Peugeot Traveller upfront wheelchair user position rear ramp WAV from Southern Mobility Vehicles

The Peugeot Traveller is a most excellent progression from the long-standing and heavily converted Peugeot Expert. Frankly, it would be hard to know this vehicle’s origins lie in the Expert as the Traveller is such a vast improvement on its predecessor. As a WAV or wheelchair accessible vehicle, it lends itself very well to the job at hand. Some fundamental advances have made it superior to the Expert by far and many other WAVs that fall into this price bracket.

Now, the wheelchair user is seated in the front passenger position in this WAV. The wheelchair passenger upfront position is not so common to see these days. Any minor change in a vehicle design can prevent a converter from getting through the vehicle this far forward. The shrinking of the variety of vehicles in the marketplace doesn’t help either, but this WAV treats the passenger upfront wheelchair user in a way that most WAVs cannot achieve. That is, to feel like they are supposed to be there and feel comfortable with it. In other words, once settled in this accessible vehicle, wheelchair users feel included and inclusive; this is no mean feat.

The driver, too, is treated well, with a generous specification to include an 8-inch touch screen entertainment centre, Bluetooth and cruise control. There is no satnav as standard, but it’s usually fitted as a factory build upgrade for this WAV. If the nav is not fitted, it’s straightforward to mirror your smartphone with the generously sized standard screen. A DAB/FM radio is included, plus a handy USB port just where you need it so you can stream your music from your phone. The screen is also the command centre for much of the Traveller’s controls, so you can electronically switch off or adjust many of the vehicle’s features.

An essential thing to note as the driver after you have sucked in the loveliness of the Traveller is the well thought out cockpit instrumentation layout. The cockpit should be admired, but only after you felt the solid thud of a well-built door closing securely behind you. It is important to note here that the Traveller’s body does feel very solid and well built. This solid build is something to be revered these days outside of (dare we say it) the premium marques, but Peugeot has done exceptionally well here with the Traveller.

Turn the key, and you’ll also note the quietness of the engine, and as you ready the Traveller for the off, there is one significant matter to reveal about this WAV. That is, the gearbox is good; no, the gearbox is superb. Suppose you have previously driven a Peugeot with that dreaded dial. Well, it’s the same dial with a new kind of smooth gear change, and we are delighted to report it is a vast improvement from the previous one.
