We believe the best experience for a wheelchair user in any WAV is ultimately their inclusivity, and this Ford Tourneo Custom conversion does just that very well indeed. The entry should feel stress-free, and coming to rest on a level floor is, for most, the ideal solution.
Apart from being designed for a wheelchair user to drive, this WAV can accommodate a second wheelchair user behind the driver, making it doubly helpful whilst accommodating a further five seated passengers with plenty of elbow room. It is the ultimate in wheelchair accessible vehicle design.
It has a fully automated remote entry system for wheelchair users. It comes complete with a switch on the dashboard, which closes the rear ramp and tailgate so you can get away quickly with no fuss. Hence, independence is all yours, and you can be the driver or the passenger in your wheelchair in this brilliantly versatile conversion.
The lowered floor on this WAV is significantly lower than many, and having a low centre of gravity means a better ride and ride height for wheelchair users. There will likely be less lateral wheelchair movement when the vehicle is in motion, and a wheelchair user’s eye line is better suited to their fellow passengers. For a wheelchair user to be in the driver position at the same height as Ford designed this vehicle is a rarity not easily found in the WAV industry.

Driver experience
The Custom was built around the driver’s needs since Ford first started making the Transit in 1953, and Ford had this perfected many years ago. The Tourneo (Ford language for car) has treats for everyone, not just the driver. Getting in and readying to drive is quick, and the switchgear is simple and where you’d expect to find it. You’ll find everything to hand and easy to manage from the first moment you sit in one.
The Tourneo drives beautifully and has a very tight turning circle. The Custom handles the bends well, and, along with auto dip headlights, it also comes with static cornering lights and cruise control. These are very helpful and, like many features on this WAV, which may seem like things you can live without; when a wheelchair user is present, especially when driving, they prove their necessity once used.
Passenger experience
All passengers get a good deal on a Tourneo Custom. You know they will work well, given how long Ford has built vehicles. The seating is comfortable, with three seats (if the driver seat remains in place) being the original manufacturer seats from the vehicle pre-conversion. There’s plenty of legroom, and of course, the view through the glass is fantastic.
The three tip and fold seats are very comfortable, recline and have armrests, all requirements in any vehicle. The fact they fold away gives good clear access for wheelchair users on and off boarding and quickly opens up to accommodate any seated passengers.
