Wheelchair user experience

From a wheelchair looking into the back of the Combo, you will see a steady rise towards the securing position in this WAV. The ramp is not unusually steep, so it should feel relaxing when onboarding and offboarding. It’s relatively quiet compared to other WAVs, which is a bonus, and there is plenty of elbow room as well. Once inside, wheelchair users should also get a good view of the outside world too, and the internal space feels light and airy, which is always a good feeling inside any vehicle.

Whilst the wheelchair user position is slightly rear of the second-row seating, and you won’t feel like you are luggage either, as any seated passenger can quickly turn to communicate with you due to their available space. The tinted rear windows will help you view the outside world and, people outside will find it much harder to see you plus, the ride is good too, which is always good news, especially for those in pain.

Driver experience

The first thing to note when entering the driver seat is it is comfortable, which is always a great start. The specification is also very good with steering wheel controls for the phone, cruise control and audio controls. You’ll find rain-sensing wipers, daytime running lights, and front and rear parking sensors, which all contribute to making driving a more pleasurable business.

The Combo manages a good turning circle, and the lively engine will get you from A to B as quickly or as slowly as you like. It’s always good to know you have the power under your right foot if you need it. Overall a great effort by Vauxhall against its competitors in this marketplace, coming with a good specification, and it’s an excellent drive to boot.

Passenger experience

Any passenger in the rear is treated well with a surprisingly comfortable coach-built seat and a superior view forward, as well as it is higher than the front seats. The front passenger has little to be disappointed in either. These days, the more elevated seating position is always a relief, and there is somewhere to put your coffee. You should be able to stretch your legs as far as you like as a bonus. Access to an onboard wheelchair user isn’t too tricky because of the seat height, and there is plenty of space to turn should the need arise without tripping over any obstacles.

We like this WAV, its specification, ride height, frugal engine, and it feels spacious without looking too van-like either. Its lively engine makes it fun to drive, and the single piece ramp is easy to deploy, well balanced and has a gentle incline. Overall the Vauxhall Combo is a great all-rounder for wheelchair users, seated passengers and drivers alike.
